It was 4:30 AM. Harrison Okene, the 29-year-old cook of the tugboat Jascon-4, woke up before everyone else to prepare breakfast for the crew. He was in the bathroom when the world suddenly turned upside down.
A rogue wave slammed into the vessel. The tugboat, located 20 miles off the coast of Nigeria, began to sink rapidly.
“It all happened in seconds,” Harrison recalls. “The ship capsized. I heard my colleagues screaming in their cabins, but there was nothing I could do. The water swept me down the hallway.”
The ship crashed onto the ocean floor, settling 30 meters (100 feet) deep. The water temperature was freezing. Harrison was trapped in the dark, certain he was already dead.
