Clara’s heart was pounding like crazy. She nodded and stood up. “I’ll just get cleaned up,” she told Greg in a trembling voice. He grabbed her wrist. “Come back quickly. We take off in 5 minutes.” His grip was strong, painful. It wasn’t a gesture of care. It was a threat.

Clara yanked her hand away and followed the flight attendant. But instead of the bathroom, Alice led her to the exit, where the plane door was still open. “Get out, quickly!” Alice commanded. “I told the pilots you have a medical emergency. Police are already waiting in the terminal.”
“Why? What happened?” Clara didn’t understand anything, but the flight attendant’s panic was contagious. She stepped onto the jet bridge.
