The Davises contacted activist Karen Riley, who helps reunite trafficked children with their parents. Together, they tracked down Namata’s real mother in Uganda. They arranged a video call via Skype.
When the woman on the screen saw her daughter, she broke down sobbing. It turned out the agency had gone to the village and offered poor families an “education program.” They told Namata’s mother that her daughter would go to America to study, get an education, and return home as a doctor or teacher.

The mother thought she was sending her child to a boarding school abroad. She didn’t know she was signing papers to terminate her parental rights. She couldn’t read English. She thought the Davises were “sponsors,” not new parents.
The agency had simply stolen the child through deception and sold her to an unsuspecting American family.
