Surveillance footage shows Jessica freezing on the couch. She mutes the TV and listens. Her face goes pale.
Mark, fully committed to the role, uses his key to unlock the door but kicks it open to make a loud bang. He bursts into the hallway, breathing heavily and brandishing the crowbar.
Jessica’s reaction was instant and not what Mark expected. She didn’t scream. She didn’t cry.
She let out a sound like a strangled gasp and, without a second of hesitation, sprinted. She didn’t run toward him or try to hide in the bathroom. She bolted through the kitchen to the back door, which led to the backyard and the dense woods beyond.
“She moved so fast… I’ve never seen her look like that,” Mark said.
