As the beam of his light cut through the darkness, Eloy gasped. He stumbled back, grabbing his brother’s shoulder.

They scrambled through the opening, their boots crunching on something that wasn’t rock. When they stood up and looked around, they weren’t in a mine anymore. They were in another world.
It looked like the fortress of a giant. Massive, translucent beams jutted out from the floor, walls, and ceiling, crisscrossing in a chaotic, glittering web.
Some of the crystals were larger than pine trees—up to 36 feet long and weighing 55 tons. It was a cathedral of glass, hidden in the pitch black for half a million years. But as they marveled at the beauty, they didn’t notice the danger creeping into their lungs.
