Walter sat in his driveway, staring at the smoke rising from the hood of his 2003 Nissan Altima.
It was the night before the most important day of his life: his first day at a new job. He needed this paycheck. After Hurricane Katrina destroyed his childhood home, he and his mother were rebuilding from zero.
He checked his phone. The job site was 20 miles away.
He didn’t have money for a taxi. He didn’t have anyone to call.
He looked at the time: 11:00 PM. He had to be there by 8:00 AM.
Most people would have called and quit. Walter did something else.
