Kevin flinched and snapped his eyes open. His heart hammered in his chest. Had his mother heard him? Had she actually come?
He turned around slowly. A woman was standing behind him.

The sun was shining directly behind her back, creating a strange, almost angelic glow around her silhouette. She looked sad, but incredibly kind.
“Why are you crying, sweet boy?” she asked in a gentle voice.
Kevin wiped his eyes with his sleeve. “I have no mother. I was asking my mom to take me away from here.”
The woman sighed, and tears glistened in her eyes too. She sat down on the grass next to him.
