Anna placed her hand on the railing.
Her pulse thumped in her ears so loudly she almost couldn’t hear the silence upstairs.

Every step she took up the staircase felt heavier than the last.
Halfway up, she paused.
A beam of light, faint and trembling, spilled from under the guest room door.
But she hadn’t left that light on.
At least… she didn’t think she had.
Anna took a breath, trying to steady her thoughts.

Or had someone turned it on?
A new question formed in her mind — one she didn’t want to ask.
